Blow Up Director: Michelangelo Antonioni Produced by: Carlo Ponti Starring: David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, Peter Bowles and Veruschka von Lehndorff. This is one of my favorite movies and, of course, the first time I saw it, I fell in love with David Hemmings character, his Nikon F and his obsession for antiques. But in the end, it’s the “swinging London” I deeply loved: the colours, the music the haircut, the clothes. – The movie is in colour, I […]
This picture was taken last year by my geeky bf in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, with a Canonet 28. I really love it because it’s simple..and of course there is a vintage bicycle that just happened to be there, like that woman on the right dressed in black…I mean, this image was meant to be taken. There’s nothing else to say. The good part comes with the analog photography, where…you don’t really know for sure if the picture you just took […]
Today, we went to the MNCARS – Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, I wanted to see James Coleman exhibition ( my friend Cynthia Gonzalez told me it was “awesome” so, I had to go and see..). But now I just wanted to show you some pictures I took while visiting An ear to the sound of our history, part of the big Sharon Hayes exhibition “Habla”. A collection of music, political and important social event records cover showing […]
I’m in love with espadrilles, they’re everywhere here and I cannot stop looking at them. For men, for women, I would like to buy tons of them, of every colour. Blue, red, orange, stripes, plain colours…I’ve only have one pair and I wanted to buy another one..but wich one?! – well, if you read the previous post, you know which one I would choose eheh – Do you like espadrilles? Lots of people don’t like them, I know…and I almost […]
Aah! Madrid! This great modern city in July is almost unbearable, the temperature is so high you’ll want to hide yourself under the bed and never go outside anymore till September. I’m joking of course. But I remember some nights from past years with 31º at 1 am…I mean, that’s not fair, you know you won’t sleep at all, and no, the open window doesn’t help! So this is my usual outfit…it’s like my uniform, and it’s my way to […]
My boyfriend took this picture last year with a Yashika Mat 124G camera. We were in a tiny village in the center of Italy, Castelbasso, attending to an Art Festival filled with concerts and exhibitions. It was beautiful all around but then he stopped and took a picture of this statue, so sad and magnificent. I used it today as inspiration to make the pattern you see below. I like to use watercolours to create new patterns, it’s kind of […]
Yesterday night I went out with some friends and finished lingering around the Caixa Forum Museum in the center of Madrid. I’ve always loved this building, especially the entrance. As you can see it has a geometric ceiling and the first thing that came into my mind was a watercolour pattern! I think this could me a good creative method to study patterns: take pictures of even simplier places and buildings and then to study them. So yes, I’m a […]
Last sunday I went visiting an art book fair here in Madrid, Masquelibros. Now I’m editing the pictures and writing the next post for the column “Dispatches from Spain” over at Poppytalk. Expect lots of paper works, art books and an impressive scenario! See you soon, Serena
I have to say I was inspired by Igor’s post on his wonderful Happy Interior Blog, to use these colours! Actually it was after twitting him to say how much I loved that combo, that I realized I HAD to do something with it today! Just a little side note:it was difficult to go ahead and finish the whole page without using a bit of yellow, I was so tempted! Well, next time I see a combo with yellow in it I’ll […]
So I did it! I took the watercolours I liked the most, and print it on a tote and on cardboard to make notebooks 🙂 (Actually,I made another tote, but I already sold it and wasn’t clever enough to take a picture of it before…uff!) Anyway, this is the first experiment, I really like the idea of printing on fabrics! In this tote I only took one line of decoration..in the other one I printed the whole watercolour decoration on […]
Yesterday I took a few pics while visiting this big art center based in Madrid: El Matadero. It was sunny and hot and dry as always it is here in Madrid during the summer time. The place is so big that looked like empty but still, very interesting. This art center has different buildings recently renovated – actually, there are more of them waiting to be restored. We visited one of the Photoespaña exhibition held there: “Nuestro trabajo nunca acaba”, and the Cineteca, an […]
That’s right…watercolors. Lemon, Orange and Agua : these are the colors I’m in love with right now. This is a pattern I made a few days ago, I was looking for a simple design to apply to a white-cream cotton bag. Do you like it? 🙂
Among the notebooks I made during the past 6 months I chose the one that was most pinned, or mentioned…the one that received the highest score. So I’ve made almost 30 different kinds, all A6 and with different colours. I’ve also produced 4 little A7 notebooks and 4 bookmarks, as prototypes for the moment. The colours used for the carboards are: Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Black. The colours used for the pages are: Green, Orange, Yellow, Beige, Lavender. […]
A client from Italy emailed me with specifics about a notebook she wanted to have ready for her mother’s birthday in June. Her mother likes to bake cakes and cookies, so the illustrations should have been about sweets. She chose the papers for the covers and I took some pics here to study the possible results. I had some hard time deciding the subject for the pop-up and finally ended up with a cake. Yesterday she emailed me telling […]
Tomorrow, 2nd of June, I’ll be at the Dosde Market: a little market for indipendent designers and boutiques in a lovely square in the center of Madrid – Plaza del Dos de Mayo 😉 Everything started when my friend Nicola Thomason, the industrious-genius mind behind Cover Story Design, asked me to join her to partecipate in this market..” it’s going to be fun!”. So why not!! I made an entire collection of 30 different notebooks for this occasion! So, […]
I’m working like crazy to produce like..25 notebooks for the 2nd of June (Dosde Market, Madrid). The notebooks will have bright covers and the same decoration of this one. Right now I’m making light-blu, orange, yellow, pink and green covers. I’m really excited about the color-mix I’ll get!
Today, while I was getting ready for the Dosde Market (taking place the 2nd of June, meaning: cutting, folding, cutting folding and back again..), lot of things happened! 😉 – My latest post for Poppytalk was published! Dispatches from Spain: Olula-la – My dear friend, the videomaker Cynthia Gonzalez, wrote a wonderful post about me on Hitsbook website! La creatividad de Serena Olivieri – My notebooks were featured on Poppytalk together with other fantastic paper goods made by crafter and […]
This watercolours patterns are based on some previous geometric patterns I made. I wanted to change them a bit, so I tried to fit botanical forms into geometrical shapes and I’m kind of happy with the results, if you look well at it you’ll see soya leaves, roses, artichokes, someone collecting them…;)) I’m really enjoying making these watercolours and I’ll be making more.. Hope you’ll like them too!
So, a client asked me a journal with pockets, A5 size, starting from this one, with some pages to use as photo album. About the cover: he chose the paper among the classic ones I always have ( Grafiche Tassotti). I used a blue fabric for the spine and part of the covers as I did in a recent photoalbum/journal. He wanted to add somewhere in the journal 4 poems he actually personalized for his girlfriend. (So romantic!). I decided to […]
It’s a custom journal-photoalbum a client asked me. He’s a journalist and loves to write about his baby daughter and wanted something to keep things together: photos, letters, notes etc. He also wanted something related to his hometown in southern Spain and to the Mediterrean Sea. So we decided it would be half journal, half photoalbum, with pockets. In this post I showed and explained the project to him, he accepted them, so I went on. I finally felt I had to […]
Work in progress. This is another collection of pictures I took today while I was preparing all the necessary things to start bookbinding for a client. It will be a notebook, A6 size, I’ll have to make 3 illustrations about food/cooking + a pop up + a pocket. It will be based on this one and customized for a person that likes to cook 😉 My client chose the papers among the ones from the Tiger store: the cover will have two […]
This A6 size notebook could be an evolution of the previous one I made. COLOR: It’s just like that: the combination of lavander & pink made me add a yellow touch. Why? I don’t know (well, yes, I know…I’ve a lot of yellow paper around here;)) SHAPE: Now, why did I choose to cut out the pieces…? That’s because lately I’ve been thinking about how to put all the 3d paper sculptures shapes (like the ones Jen Stark does) on a bidimensional […]
I made this notebook following my great passion for cut edges on the cover. I started with the flowers (as you can see in the previous post) and shifted here to geometric shapes. I was looking for a new perspective of the interaction between simple, plain colors and lines. I tried to take advantage of the double cover to give an ultimate effect. Why am I using pink right now? The answer is really simple: because I have a lot […]
This notebook has the same decoration as the green one I made some month ago. I’ve always wanted to start a series using this kind of cover, so this is the first variation. The difference here is that I added a brown cardboard flyleaf that repeats the same cut edges the cover has. The illustrations on the cover are handmade. Traditional binding system, blank recycled pages. I hope you’ll like it 😉 Ps..: If you’re interested, you can buy it […]
I’ve been into neon colors lately. So I started playing with them. Here you’ll see some pictures I took while cutting and glueing two days ago. These are basically studies for the covers of a new line of neon-notebooks I’ve in mind. This time I was playing with the layers, trying to juxtapose them in a certain fashion..I wanted to find a good balance between colors and shapes, but I also wanted to test the paper, to see if it […]
I’ve been working on many custom works lately I couldn’t blog as I would!..This is a paper-flower I made laste week-end, you’ll see the instructions on a post at Dearest Nature’s blog on the 1st of May. I realized I could have used some neon colors paper I bought…it was too late! But I’ll be creating more flowers, mores shapes..with neon colors;) Hope you’ll like it!
This is a very simple agenda, A5 size, it has blank pages and hard cover. As you can see, the right side is different from the left side..I didn’t planned it! Since many things in my work happen by chance, this time I realized – to late – I didn’t have enough yellow paper, so I had to use the red one ( a very tiny piece..) I think I might start a series with neon colors…strong colors like these. […]
I had to take pictures of these papers to show them to one of my clients, so he could see and decide. It’s a journal he’s going to write for his baby daughter, A4 size. He wanted something related to the Mediterranean Sea and a tiny village in Spain, so I choose these colors accordingly. Between the deep blue of the sea and the beige/ocre of the houses and the sand of southern Spain. For the hardcover I’ll use that […]
My client wanted a functional diary: half notebook, half photo-album, with pockets. When she saw the daisy paper she asked me to use it for the cover and for some boxes I’ll post tomorrow. COVER// Hard cover. The beautiful paper is from Grafiche Tassotti. The spine and the corners are protected by green fabric. PAGES +PHOTOALBUM//Half of the diary has light cream blank pages (72g) while the other half is a photo-album, with heavier paper (200g) + vegetal paper. As you […]
Lately I’ve been using watercolours to study new patterns. This is part of a new project called “digital vs handmade”, where I’m going to produce the same pattern in both ways: Illustrator vs watercolours. In this case, while I was painting I didn’t have a drawing to follow…it was more automatic or spontaneous. I believe it’s a good exercise to express the inner creativity. Sometimes I find out really good patterns that way 😉 I’ll soon post a stop-motion video I […]
Here it is my latest work: a , based on this one. My client told me that her friend (the final recipient) was fond of nature, birds and bright colors. COVER// We agreed to use the same style of colorful papers I already used for other diaries on my blog. By the way..I buy them here in Madrid, in the Tiger shop. (Someone asked me if it was possible to buy them online, but I don’t think so..). The front […]
Here there are some pictures I took today. You can see all the notebooks and agendas to be :)) I’ve been preparing all the signatures for the new books. I had 3 of them already sewed, one with cords the other two the spanish way (without cords) I love the colors of the papers..next time I’ll be taking pictures of the covers. For daily sneak peeks take a look here ;))
I mean to use this illustration for a notebook/photo album. I was going to make more, but now I’m not so sure. May be I’ll change it a bit more. The design of the flowers is from the Grafiche Tassotti paper I’ll use to the cover the cardboard. The orginal idea was to draw something on vegetal paper to decorate the photo album part. I wanted to stay on the same subject.. Well, I hope you’ll like it;) (Source: http://player.vimeo.com/)
This A6 diary was made for a client as a birthday present for a friend. He chose among my agendas the one with the cut edges, but he wanted something more..like some surprise inside. So I used the same decoration on the cover for the illustrations that are inside, on the vegetal paper pages. There’s a vegetal paper with an illustration each 8 plain pages. The cover is simple red cardboard. The flyleaves are also cardboard (double sided color black/white). […]
I wanted to share part of the creation process, the illustration stage. To take a picture every 4 or five lines could be very frustrating, that’s why after the break, I started to go faster! 😉 This illustration is made on vegetal paper with black ink (0.3). This page will wrap other 4 plain pages to be a signature. This book will have 10 signatures. There will be a pop-up in this book and I’ll use there the same flower […]
A6 size for this diary/photoalbum, a present thought for a very classy lady. As you can see, I covered the cardboard with my beloved Grafiche Tassotti paper. In the main diary there are no illustrations, just plain pages. Inside the pocket on the left, there’s a little photo album with a poem from Antonio Machado, who was appointed to me as one of my client’s favorite poets. I used the same Tassotti paper to cover three little boxes that go […]
A6 size, dark and sexy diary made for a female client who, I’m told, loves exotic flavours. The black paper I used to cover the cardboard is handmade and comes from India, the little silver-colored spots are embossed on the surface. The first two and last two pages are fashioned as a photo album. Every 8 pages there’s a handmade illustration on vegetal paper. All the drawings feature different part of the same image. I did that illustration during my […]
This notebook (size A5) is sewed using the traditional cord system. Its “uniqueness” is simply in the handmade ink drawings I did on the cover. I was tempted to fill all the surface with flowers, but finally I decided to put them on the right, where I could cut the edges to give an ultimate effect. At least, three of my last works have green paper!! It’s my green period 😉 Hope you’ll like it.
I made this special notebook for a harpsichord teacher/musician friend, a present her boyfriend asked me to produce especially for her. The occasion was the late feast of the Epiphany. I would like to point out that here in Spain, the Epiphany feast is more known as “Reyes magos”, or simply “Reyes”, which is kind of a big deal and more important even than Christmas when it comes to presents. Well, what a digression…isn’t it?! Back to the present: I knew she […]
“Second Edition” of this prototype, now created for a specific client. In this occasion I changed the illustrations, which obviously are not about my trip in Asia, but about flowers. 15×10 cm, traditional cord binding system. I bought the paper in the Tiger shop here in Madrid.
Here we go with this lovely, weird yet unique hardcover photo album. It took me a lot to get all the materials and to decide how to do it. Well, in the end it’s very simple: you choose where to put the pictures. I used Tassotti paper for the hard cover and Canson violet paper (180mg) for the pages. Traditional cord book binding system.
First agenda of a series about hobbies and professions. The ink illustration and the title on the cover are handmade and handwritten. The binding is also handmade using the traditional chords binding system.
